Looking to start your te reo Māori journey or connect more deeply with Ngāi Tahu history? There’s a wealth of knowledge available online through Ngāi Tahu’s platforms. Here are some key places to start:
1. Te Reo – Kotahi Mano Kāika
If you’re starting (or restarting) your reo journey, the Kotahi Mano Kāika website offers four introductory reo modules, complete with sound files to help with pronunciation in the Ngāi Tahu dialect. You’ll also find an impressive collection of learning resources, including a handy one-page reference guide you can view here.
2. Atlas – Cultural Mapping Project
Kā Huru Manu, The Ngāi Tahu Cultural Mapping Project, is dedicated to mapping the traditional Māori place names and associated stories within the Ngāi Tahu rohe (tribal area). Place names are tangible reminders of the Ngāi Tahu relationship with the landscape of Te Waipounamu. The Ngāi Tahu Cultural Mapping Project is a fascinating way to explore our history, geography, and place names.
3. Ngāi Tahu – Resource Hub
The Ngāi Tahu | Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu website is full of valuable information. Under the “Resources” tab, you’ll find materials which provide a great reference point for teachers, students, and anyone eager to learn.
Take a moment to explore these sites, bookmark your favourites, and share them with whānau and friends.
These resources have been kindly recommended by Hokonui Rūnanga.
