Board Assessment Tools

board assement

A board assessment is an important step in good governance to help identify areas you need to work on as an organisation.

NZ Navigator is a free online self-assessment tool tailored for New Zealand community groups.  Head to the NZ Navigator website and set up an account (it's free) and then you can create your self-assessment tool for your board that can either be completed by one person on behalf of the organisation or by multiple members of your board looking at governance, leadership and administration.  You will receive a unique link to share with other members of your organisation to complete the assessment. You set a completion date for responses to be collected by. Your report will be generated once the completion date is met.  The report includes scores, feedback and links to resources to support further development.

Community Governance Aotearoa also have a great board evaluation that looks at the six principles of good governance and helps you consider your own practices and policies against some helpful guiding questions.  Check it out here.

Do you have the right skill set on your board?

Looking at what skills you have on your board is a good way to assess your strengths as an organisation and help with succession planning.  It is also a good exercise to identify gaps to help with board recruitment and see where you might need some external help.
